Description:

Cordeceps dates back to the Qing Dynasty of 1757AD.  Its name Summer plant, winter worm is derived from the parasitic action of the fungus which attacks the caterpillar ultimately kills it and then grows a black blade shaped mushroom to reproduce.  The Cordeceps today are grown on media aseptically.  In 1993 Chinese female runners set several long distance records for the 1500 and 10,000 meter runs.  The success in part was attributed to a special Cordyceps containing diet that enhanced their physical performance and endurance. Cordyceps have been approved in China for the treatment of fatigue, male and female hypo sexualities, including impotence, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, asthenia after severe illness, respiratory diseases, renal dysfunction and renal failure, arrhythmias and other heart diseases, and liver diseases.

Medicinal Properties:

Cordyceps has an extensive history for the treatment of chronic bronchitis, especially in the elderly patients, and of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, and other respitory disease,(Halpern , 1998, Alternative complementary medicine).  A significant improvement was reported for chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and cor pulmonale after treatment with cordyceps, (Han, 1995).  Tang and Jiang, 1994 reported in a three month open labeled clinical trial, cordyceps was used to treat 38 elderly patients.  They had intractable arrhythmias caused by varying degrees of heart disease.  Patients with super ventricular arrhythmias and ventricle arrhythmias , the majority gained complete or partial recovery of their ECG.  They report the longer the therapy the better the clinical improvement .  Feng et al, 1987, reports natural Cordyceps is effective in reducing the heart rate.  In Clinical application of fermented Cordyceps sinensis (part III): Toxicology, Cordyceps is reported to be very safe.  It was reported that a lethal dose to kill 50 % of the test animals could not be determined.  Another study of 2000 patients in China found Cordyceps to be safe and effective.  Cordyceps products can regulate the metabolism of blood lipids, control hyperlipidemia, and act against the formation of arteriosclerosis.
